We continue with the theme that before Mashiach comes, we need to have peace, in order to fix the original sin of baseless hatred.
Who will bring peace? Eliyahu HaNavi. How so? Firstly, he will stop arguments. Secondly, he will be the final opinion on Halacha.
Furthermore, the Sefer Yaarot Devash(vol1, first derush) explains the different Berachot of the Amida. He explains that when saying Hashiba Shoftenu/Bring us back our judges, one is supposed to think about the fact that we will have a Sanhedrin once again.
Moshe Rabbenu gave semicha to 70 judges in the desert. Those judges gave semicha to other judges, and that continued on until the time of the Bet HaMikdash. Since the Bet Hamikdash was destroyed, we no longer have semicha.
Today the term semicha is used when a rabbi is ordained, but it’s just a borrowed term.
True Semicha must come from someone who got semicha from someone who got it, going all the way back to Moshe Rabbenu.
But we don’t have anybody like this anymore. So how will we ever start up the Bet Din again, which we need for our court system, in order to set everything up for the Bet HaMikdash?
His answer is that there is one man still alive today, named Eliyahu HaNavi. He never died. He was ordained from Moshe Rabbenu. Therefore, he is that man of tradition who will be able to give semicha.
So Eliyahu HaNavi will bring shalom in that he will set up the judges, and when we have good judges, there is beracha in the world.
That is why we say, every day in our prayers of Hashiba Shoftenu, “to remove anger and groaning from us.”
We have many problems today such as Agunot/women who can’t get married because their husbands refuse to give them gets, deadbeat dads, business arguments.. all of this would not exist if we had a court. The court would whip and punish them until they gave in. But we don’t have a court system, so we are not in control today. We don’t really have a Bet Din that has any real force today. We are in a host country, and we follow their rules. We don’t have a justice system the way we should. America is beautiful, but as time goes on we see that there is what to be desired in the justice system. Therefore, we should have in mind when we pray Hashiba Shoftenu that we want our judges back. Many people don’t have much kavana on this beracha. But we want our judges back, because our judges will set up our system properly, and bring Shalom.
And it’s Eliyahu HaNavi that will bring this about.
