The sefer Shirat David, on the Haggadah Shel Pesach, brings down a fascinating Midrash that asks: If the Jewish people are so dear to God, why did He put them into Egypt? They quote Rav Hanina as saying that Hashem was concerned that Yaakov Avinu had four wives. Leah and Rachel were considered the main wives, and Bilha and Zilpa were considered secondary wives. They were called Shifhas because they were really given over as maid-servants, So they and their children weren’t given the proper respect or treated equally, and that bothered Hashem. They were not treated as brothers of the same status. As a pasuk in Shir HaShirim says, Hashem said, “ You are all beautiful, My beloved one.”
In order that the maid servants and their sons should be treated equally, God had this idea: He would take them all down to Egypt, they would all be slaves, “And then, when I redeem them, they will come to the Seder night and say, ‘Avadim Hayinu L’Paroah/ We were slaves to Paroah…’ they will all be equal.”
That is the goal of Yetziat Mitzrayim: There should be no class system among the Jewish people. There should be no elite. We are all one nation- regardless of what nationality or tribe you come from, regardless of how you arrived in the country that you are in, whether you are called foreigners, newcomers , immigrants, or whether you came by boat or airplane….
I am not using specific names because every community has their own class system…And that is not what Hashem wants.
The goal of Yetziat Mitzrayim is that we don’t point at somebody else and say, “He is a slave,” because we are all slaves. We are all immigrants. We are all strangers. And therefore, do not look down at anybody, based on his last name, his accent, or the country that he came from.
