We once learned from Rav Yehezkiel Levenstein that we have to appreciate what it means, and how great it is to be a Yisrael, and then we will love every Jewish person.
In Parashat Yitro (19,5) Hashem tells us that if you listen to the Torah and keep His covenant, וִהְיִיתֶם לִי סְגֻלָּה מִכׇּל־הָעַמִּים כִּי־לִי כׇּל־הָאָרֶץ׃
You’ll be a segula/ treasure to Me, from all the nations, and the whole land is Mine.
Hashem calls us by this great title- a Segula. This is like someone who owns a lot of diamonds calling us the Hope Diamond. God has everything. In Devarim him he says, “God lifted you up..” He lifted us up to be an Am Segula, a treasure nation, when He said these words וִהְיִיתֶם לִי סְגֻלָּה
You’ll be My segula/treasure
We, the Jewish people are His, as it says in Devarim (32,9), כִּי חֵלֶק ה׳ עַמּוֹ
We are a part of God.
Sefer Yikarim (in Ma’Amar ג chap 37), tells us that His love for the Jewish people is like the unexplainable love of a couple. He says that the whole Shir HaShirim is written on this love, that God had for the Jewish people. It’s not because of our numbers. As it says in Devarim (7/7) לֹא מֵרֻבְּכֶם מִכׇּל־הָעַמִּי it’s not because you’re so many..
Hashem doesn’t love us because of our numbers, or became of our righteousness, as it says in Devarim (9,6) לֹא בְצִדְקָתְךָ
God loves us because He loves us … כי חשק בלי טעם
That’s what it means,
וִהְיִיתֶם לִי סְגֻלָּה
You’ll be My treasured nation
When we received the Torah, it created this love. He says that a segula is a treasure that can be very small, but it’s perfect. It’s more beloved than anything else.
He says that, “A little bit of service that He receives from a Jewish person is more precious to him than from a lot, or all the nations.”
There is a mashal that if you have nine people waiting for a minyan, and another billion non-Jews join, you still can’t say Kaddish. But if just one 13 year old boy walks in, now you can say Kaddish. That is the segula. That is how special every Jewish person is.
He quotes a sefer Seder Hayom that says it’s not just referring to Sadikim. Even sinners.
We have to appreciate what a Jew is, and that includes everybody. Every Jew that you see has that in them, and this is the reason to love every Jewish person.
